Lander loves to be self-sufficient – hunting wildlife like antelope, deer, and elk and fishing for bass, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and other fish in the Flathead River and the Blackfoot River. They’re not only hobbies for Lander but also an important source of food for his family.
However, he’s experiencing the impacts of climate change firsthand as it affects his ability to fish and enjoy the great outdoors. As water temperatures have increased, fish in his local rivers are dying off, and changes in precipitation patterns are causing the rivers he often fishes to shut down because of low water levels, followed by flooding when large amounts of rain spurts later occur.
“As a young person, the burden of climate change and my government’s actions to promote fossil fuels falls to my generation to fix, which isn’t fair.”
